Benefits of a Hybrid Heat Pump

A hybrid heat pump is designed to use electricity when it is most efficient, while the gas boiler supports your home during colder weather.

Enjoy Reliable Warmth

Your gas boiler supports your heating system during colder weather, keeping your home warm when it matters most.

Lower Your Emissions

A gas hybrid heat pump reduces carbon emissions compared to traditional heating systems.

Smart Energy Use

Automatically selects the
most efficient energy source, gas or electricity based on temperature and heating demand.

Update Your System

The conversion often works with your existing gas heating system, lowering the cost of installation compared to traditional heat pumps

Gas network operators are working together

The gas hybrid heat pump allowance builds on earlier smaller projects that showed promising results and now expands to a large-scale, real-world initiative focused on owner-occupied homes across Northern Ireland.

Why this programme is being delivered

Supporting more efficient, future-ready home heating across Northern Ireland.

Northern Ireland must transition towards lower-carbon home heating to meet our regional climate objectives.

While switching from oil to natural gas can reduce home carbon emissions by up to 50%, the gas industry is now exploring how we can reduce emissions even further by combining biomethane ready gas boilers with highly efficient heat pumps.

A hybrid heat pump offers consumers the best of both worlds, combining the efficiency of a heat pump with the reliability of a gas boiler in an easily installable package that delivers lower carbon emissions without change to comfort.

This programme supports selected homeowners across Northern Ireland with financial support to upgrade their oil or gas boiler to a hybrid heat pump.
